Why does WhatsApp ban your number, and how does the official API prevent it?

WhatsApp bans numbers that use unofficial apps (like GB WhatsApp), tools that automate WhatsApp Web, or that send bulk messages and get many reports. The official WhatsApp Business API is the Meta-authorized way for a business to automate its conversations, so it removes the risk of unauthorized tools. But it isn't immune: if you message people without their permission or your customers block and report you, Meta restricts the account too.

  • Modified apps and tools that automate WhatsApp Web break WhatsApp's terms.
  • The official API is the authorized way to automate, with approved templates and customer permission.
  • With the API, your customers decide your quality: blocks and reports lead to penalties.
  • You can move to the API without losing your number or chats, using coexistence.

Why does WhatsApp ban a number?

WhatsApp bans or restricts an account when its activity breaks its Terms of Service. It detects this with machine learning and user reports. These are the most common causes:

  • Using unofficial or modified apps, such as GB WhatsApp, FM WhatsApp or TM WhatsApp.
  • Linking the account to unofficial sites or programs, such as extensions or «unofficial APIs» that automate WhatsApp Web.
  • Sending bulk or automated messages, or using autodialing.
  • Messaging contact lists that didn't give you their number, such as purchased lists.
  • Getting many blocks and reports from the people you message.

Receiving many messages at once doesn't cause a ban. If a promotion makes hundreds of customers message you, that's not a problem for WhatsApp.

Do unofficial tools get you banned?

Yes, it's the most direct cause. WhatsApp's Terms forbid accessing the service through unauthorized automated means and creating software or APIs that work like WhatsApp. The Help Center warns that linking your account to an unofficial app or site, now or in the past, can lead to a temporary or permanent suspension.

WhatsApp has also announced that it takes legal action against people and companies that do bulk or automated messaging, or help others do it.

With coexistence you can use both on the same number.

Does the official API keep you from being banned?

It removes the risk of automating with unauthorized tools, because it's the way Meta approves for businesses to automate their conversations. You can use AI agents and flows, as long as customers have a clear way to reach a person.

What it doesn't prevent is the risk of misuse. Meta rates the quality of each number and template (green, yellow or red) based on your customers' blocks, reports and mutes. If you get too much negative feedback or break the policy, penalties escalate:

  • A warning.
  • A 1 to 3 day block on sending templates.
  • A 5, 7 or 30 day block on sending any message.
  • An indefinite account lock, lifted only through an appeal.
  • Permanent deactivation. In severe cases, such as scams, it's immediate.

A change in your favor: since October 7, 2025, lower quality no longer reduces your messaging limit. Red templates are paused for 3 hours, then 6, and disabled the third time.

How to use the API without risking your number

  • Only message people who gave you their number and agreed to receive your messages. The permission must name your business.
  • If you can, ask for permission by message type: order updates on one side and promotions on the other.
  • More than 24 hours after the customer's last message, write only with approved templates.
  • Make messages useful and personal. Avoid generic greetings and sending too many in one day.
  • Offer a clear way to opt out and respect it.
  • If a bot replies, always offer the option to talk to a person.
  • Monitor the quality of your number and templates.

In Latin America, WhatsApp may not deliver a marketing message to someone who rarely reads marketing messages. Resending doesn't fix it: wait at least 24 hours and improve the content.

What to do if your number is already banned

  • In the app, tap «Request a review». Most reviews are resolved within 24 hours. If that option doesn't appear, the ban is final.
  • On the API, request the review from Meta's Business Support Home. It usually takes 24 to 48 hours, and some spam violations can't be appealed.
  • Only WhatsApp can unban an account: be wary of anyone offering to do it.
  • While the account is banned you can't access your chat history or backups.

How to move to the official API without losing your number

With coexistence you connect the same number to the API and keep using the WhatsApp Business app (version 2.24.17 or later). When connecting you can bring up to 6 months of one-to-one chats and your contacts, if you do it within the first 24 hours.

Keep in mind that your broadcast lists become read-only: messaging many customers moves to templates through the API. And if you used an unofficial app or tool, stop using it before connecting.

FAQ about WhatsApp bans

Why did WhatsApp ban my number?

Because its activity broke WhatsApp's Terms: for example, using unofficial apps, automating WhatsApp Web with unauthorized tools, sending bulk messages or getting many reports and blocks.

Can using GB WhatsApp get me banned?

Yes. WhatsApp considers GB WhatsApp, FM WhatsApp and TM WhatsApp unofficial apps, and using them can lead to a temporary or permanent ban.

Does the official WhatsApp API keep me from being banned?

It removes the risk of using unauthorized tools, because it's the way Meta approves for automation. It doesn't protect you if you message people without permission or your customers block and report you: in that case Meta penalizes the account too.

Is bulk messaging on WhatsApp forbidden?

The Terms forbid unauthorized bulk or automated messaging. With the official API you can send approved templates to customers who gave you permission, within your messaging limits, but not to purchased lists.

How many contacts fit in a WhatsApp Business broadcast list?

Up to 256, and only people who saved your number in their contacts receive the message.

Can I move to the API without losing my number or chats?

Yes, with coexistence: you keep using the WhatsApp Business app and can bring up to 6 months of one-to-one chats and your contacts.
